IBEW RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM
IBEW RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM
For individuals not qualifying for electrical apprenticeship, or for those non-union electgricians stuck in dead end jobs with few benefits and no security ... and who are interested in union membership ... our residential program may present an acceptable alternative.

Residential or "Small Works" members are assigned to work on residential construction projects, free standing buildings 13,000 square feet or smaller and uncontrolled construction projects. For those residential members who enter the program with little or no previous electrical construction experience, training is provided at no cost. After review by the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, advanced standing will be granted to residential members who can document previous work experience and schooling in the electrical industry.

Training is comprised of two components, on-the-job training (OJT) and classroom instruction. During the OJT component, inexperienced members work under the supervision of qualified residential wiremen who teach them the electrical trade in a "real world environment". Classroom instruction is comprised of a structured and challenging three-year curriculum developed by the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, NJATC. Residential members attend school two evenings per week for approximately 20 weeks per year at our state of the art training academy.

Residential members who successfully complete the three-year residential curriculum are encouraged to enroll in our journeyman upgrade training course. After completing jhourneyman upgrade training, residential members may seek a "change in classification" from residential wireman to journeyman inside wireman. Since the inception of our program in 1986, over 175 residential members have upgraded to journeyman inside wireman and are engaged in exciting careers!
